Review: Little Green Sheep

Sprogmama bedding, clothes, sleep Reviews 2 Comments

Being a particularly paranoid mummy when it comes to SIDS, I’ve been looking into every possible preventative measure I can find. One interesting theory is that the chemicals used in mattress manufacture can be a contributing factor, to alleviate this possible risk some parents wrap their existing mattresses in a non-toxic cover, while others buy an organic, chemical-free mattress.

I decided to do the latter and after a bit of googling discovered Little Green Sheep, creators of luxury organic cotton, Welsh wool and coconut fibre mattresses. They offer a whole range of organic bedding but as it is quite pricey and I wanted to see what the quality was like first, I opted for just a crib mattress and matching protector.

The mattress was delivered promptly and the first thing I noticed was how thick and heavy it was. It felt like a flatter, denser version of a proper grown-up mattress without any horrible synthetic crinkly feel. By comparison, my existing crib mattress looked pretty cheap and nasty. The protector looked like a very dense cotton sheet, it actually has a thin layer of polyurethane inside to prevents fluid going through to the mattress.

But the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say, so what did Sprogzilla seem to think of it? Well, he certainly slept very well and it was nice to see him asleep on something that actually looked comfortable and not made of plastic. Unfortunately, he was already getting too big for the crib so less than a fortnight later we decided to go ahead and order the cot-bed equivalent.

This time I ordered a couple of fitted jersey sheets and a blanket too, the latter was a bit of an indulgence but the reviews were great so I thought I’d treat Sprogzilla. The mattress was a similar thickness to the crib one, just as good quality and very comfy looking. The sheets were ever so soft and thick, perfect for keeping my little man warm and snug. The blanket was not what I expected – it’s nothing like a typical cellular one, I’d say it resembles chain-mail in terms of texture and it’s quite heavy. Again, perfect for cooler days.

Though they weren’t cheap, I am very happy I purchased these mattresses and bedding. I don’t know if using them will really reduce the risk of SIDS, but I do know that Sprogzilla is as comfy as he could possibly be when sleeping in his cot-bed.

I was also very impressed with the customer service received – for my second order, I had trouble putting the order through online, but this was resolved promptly by telephone and I later received an email thanking me for bringing the problem to their attention.

I would recommend reading the company blog to anyone considering buying from them as they often have discounts or freebies announced there. Both times I was able to use a free delivery code and they are currently offering some free organic toiletries.

Full product range is at http://www.thelittlegreensheep.co.uk – an organic clothing range is apparently coming soon, so keep an eye out for that too if you’re interested.

Zach Snaps: Weeks 19-22

Sprogmama Photos 0 Comment

I’ve sadly been very lazy in taking photos of Sprogzilla over the last few weeks. Rest assured that will not be the case in future.

In the meantime, here are four photos showing what a busy boy he has been lately. The first pic was taken today in his sit-me-up cosy watching cBeebies. Photo two sees a cheeky grin while in the carseat. Number three is him nodding off in the jumperoo of all things! And the final pic is of him nice and snug in the buggy when we went to feed the ducks at the lake last weekend.

That Teething Business

Sprogmama teething Sprogzilla 0 Comment

I’ve been a naughty blogger again and haven’t written anything for a while. In my defence, we’ve had a bit of a tough time with Sprogzilla over the last fortnight and it’s not been easy finding free time.

Basically, the poor little fella is teething badly. He’s been showing signs for about three months now (drooling, red cheeks, munching on anything he can get into his mouth lol) but recently his night-time sleep has been getting worse and today the pain was clearly causing him great discomfort. Usually he goes down for a nap mid to late morning and it’s his most reliable nap of the day. Today however, he would not settle though you could see he was so very tired.

He eventually went to sleep after I nursed him. This usually does the trick, but I had to do it twice today as he was pulling off the breast in pain. My poor little man, I so wish this tooth would hurry up and make an appearance.

To make the whole thing even worse, he’s been having runny green poops up to seven times a day for the last couple of weeks. We took in a stool sample early last week and yesterday the results came back as normal, so several healthcare professionals have suggested the teething is to blame. He’s not been too bad today, but I won’t trust that it’s cleared up until either that tooth appears or he goes at least two days without a bowel movement.

Anyway, in more happy news, we went to baby massage yesterday and Sprogzilla enjoyed having his face, chest, arms and hands massaged. Still only managed to get one leg done though lol, he really doesn’t seem to tolerate that for long.

More Sleep Please, Oh Yes

Sprogmama sleep Mummy, Sprogzilla 0 Comment

Well, despite Sprogzilla sleeping a glorious 7 hours straight last night I’m still feeling knackered and have a headache. Guess my body must be craving more of that quality sleep.

We had baby massage again yesterday and Sprogzilla allowed us to do a whole leg and a half before protesting his tiredness. Cue the best part of an hour soothing him whilst trying to quietly socialize with the two other mums present. I rarely get to go out and meet people, so I like to have this little bit of time if I can.

We also nipped to Mamas and Papas in the afternoon to buy a new bath. As much as we love the one built into the changing table, Sprogzilla is quickly outgrowing it. The replacement is a good size and wasn’t too bad at £18.95, especially considering how expensive M&P tend to be. Did end up buying a Christmas tree decoration for ten quid though, still, Sprogzilla will only have one first Christmas lol.

Tomorrow, Philip is back at work and as usual I’m nervous. I always feel a bit stressed when left alone with Sprogzilla and I worry that it will make him grouchy in turn. Hopefully I’ll get used to it in time, Sprogdaddy also has a week off next month which is something to look forward to.

Oh well, bath and bedtime for Sprogzilla is beckoning……

Zach Snaps: Week 18

Sprogmama Photos 0 Comment

Every week or two, I intend to share a few photos of Sprogzilla. These ones are actually from late October so are a little bit behind, I haven’t taken many so far this month.

As you can see, Sprogzilla loves tummy time on the changing table right before he has his evening bath. He also loves to stand up, though of course he can’t do it without assistance just yet. The third pic is of him looking serious in his bumbo (probably brewing a poop as he typically does whilst sitting in it lol) and the fourth photo is me wearing him in the Moby wrap. Sadly I find it awkward to put on and get him in comfortably, so it’s not something we do often. Last pic is Sprogzilla feeling a bit ambitious and testing out the walker – don’t think you’re supposed to hold onto it with your mouth though little man!

If you want to see older pics from his first four months, take a peek at the Gallery page.

Bedtime Fun On CBeebies

Sprogmama tv Sprogzilla 0 Comment

Sprogzilla appears to have a taste for “In The Night Garden” since he first saw it three days ago. I’ve never seen him so enthusiastic about a TV programme, grinning like a mad thing and bouncing insanely in the jumperoo for the whole episode. Daft little monkey.

Guess I’m going to be trawling eBay looking for ITNG goodies this weekend. He seems to particularly like the tombliboos so I’ll keep an eye out for some plushies.

Uh-oh, I’m blogging again. Let’s see if I can keep up with it this time, I’ve started so many blogs in the last 10 years and ended up abandoning them. Bad mummy. *spanks self*
