What Do Readers Look For In A “Mummy” Blog?

Sprogmama blogging, depression Mummy, Random 1 Comment

I’ve been suffering from blogger depression again and as much as I hate to say it, it boils down to the lack of visits/comments on Mummy Notes. I’m not exactly vain, but it does get me down to write from the heart and post precious photos of my son only to receive next-to-no attention.

I’ve been blogging for over ten years and this niche has definitely been the toughest to earn readership in. I don’t know if the problem is my content, my style, or perhaps this part of the blogosphere is simply over-saturated. I’ve thought about broadening the subjects I write about and being more general, but then surely I’ll put off the (few) readers I’ve already got who are interested in parenting anecdotes?

My reviews are my most popular posts by a long shot, but those readers rarely comment and never come back. I find this the most disheartening because reviews take me much longer to put together and for people to not even say “thanks, that was useful” or even “that wasn’t particularly helpful” makes me wonder why I bother. I guess it’s because I take blogger reviews into account extensively when I want to buy something and I love being able to help out other people doing the same.

So, back to the title of this entry – what do you think readers are looking for? I know that content is king, but what kind of content? What draws you in and makes you want to say something? What makes you want to come back and see what’s new? How important is the look of the site? Are my images too big/small, posts too short/long etc. Or am I really just a rubbish blogger? Go on, tell me the truth. I may not like it, but I’d rather be told I’m doing a bad job and be able to do something about it. :)

Confessions Of A Non-Social Mummy Blogger

Sprogmama blogging, facebook, social networking, twitter Mummy 6 Comments

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how difficult it is to attract new readers to this blog and I’ve realised the problem is most likely me. You see, I’ve never been great at socialising, which is such an important element in online activities these days. I have a Facebook page and two on Twitter, but I’m not a diehard contributor to these mediums and I feel like posting all over the place is really just spamming. I know that’s not generally the case, commenting on other people’s blogs and social networking sites is the way to get yourself known. But it still feels a little uncomfortable for me.

The trouble is, I’m really quite a shy person. If you’ve read my earlier post on post partum depression, you’ll know I suffer from social anxiety disorder. This makes it difficult for me to interact with strangers and develop the kind of friendships that are now required to be noticed in the blogging community. It doesn’t help that the whole thing can seem like a kind of popularity contest sometimes, one that I have absolutely no chance of scoring well in – and I couldn’t care less!

I was thinking about CyberMummy earlier, as it’s merely days away and many mummy bloggers are writing about how excited they are to be attending. It’s a huge social event in the mummy blogosphere and a great way to find new contacts, but I have absolutely no desire to go. Not because of any disinterest in meeting other mums, but I simply dread large social gatherings. I’m more confident online and don’t really like the growing trend of meeting up with people offline. I like my little bubble, and the fact that I can turn away from the computer screen if I’m no longer at ease with what I’m reading or who I’m conversing with.

Am I alone in feeling this way? Am I truly out of touch with the way things are? Or is there a quiet army of fellow mums (and dads!) out there, enjoying the simple act of writing about their adventures in parenting, not looking to become a “top 10 mummy blogger” listed on popular websites?

I mean no offence to those who are doing well in this niche – in fact, I applaud you for cracking into a tough market successfully. I’ve blogged in several areas over the years, and this is definitely the hardest one to get noticed in. But I would love to get to know some of those under-the-radar mums and dads like me. I really would like to make new friends, I just prefer to have a smaller circle, rather than a zillion people on Facebook I know nothing about.

New Look, New Style

Sprogmama blogging Random 2 Comments

Apologies, once again, for being such an appalling blogger. The problem is, I love to write long, detailed posts with photos and I just never seem to have the time to sit and compose them.

Thus, I have decided to change the way I write. I may do the occasional lengthy article, but for the most part I will be making short (but regular) updates. There are so many wonderful developments taking place right now and I really want to share them here.

I’ve also freshened up the look with a simple new theme. It should look great on smartphones and tablets too!

Where Did She Go?

Sprogmama blogging Mummy 0 Comment

So it looks as though mummynotes dropped off the face of the planet for a while there – the truth is, I have been so sleep-deprived that I haven’t been able to construct a simple basic sentence, let alone an entire blog entry.

Unfortunately, my little man’s sleeping habits have gone from bad to worse since the infamous four-month sleep regression. The last few weeks have been a bit of a daze with him only sleeping 60 to 90 minute sessions all night and a couple of half-hour naps during the day.

For the last three nights though, Sprogzilla has gone as long as 3 hours in a single session – long enough for me to regain some semblance of sanity and feel alert enough to login here and give my readers a status update.

I desperately want to keep this blog going and there’s loads I want to post about, not least the arrival of my shiny new Stokke Xplory pushchair! So look out for some new entries over the next few days and I’ll do my utmost to keep things on track.

Here We Go Again!

Uh-oh, I’m blogging again. Let’s see if I can keep up with it this time, I’ve started so many blogs in the last 10 years and ended up abandoning them. Bad mummy. *spanks self*
