….And That Was Christmas

Sprogmama christmas, height, kitchen, talking, teething Mummy, Photos, Sprogzilla 2 Comments

So I’ve been told I need to get off my arse and blog a lot bit more often. Yes dear hubby, I am paying attention.

Obviously we have just had Christmas, though it’s not a particularly busy time for us as we aren’t social butterflies and have very little family to speak of. We spent the day lounging around in our pyjamas (nothing new there), opening Sprogzilla’s presents and preparing dinner. The boy wasn’t particularly impressed with the latter and to be honest it wasn’t the best roast I’ve ever eaten. We bought a “three-meat” joint which sounded nice at the time, but the combination of duck, chicken and turkey with stuffing turned out to be a bit of a letdown.

On the presents front, things were rather better. The wooden kitchen I’d spent three hours assembling was greeted with much enthusiasm, as were the contents I’d lovingly stuffed it with. Many shrieks of “wow!” ensued from a certain little boy.

We took our time giving him the rest of his gifts. It was certainly a more exciting affair than last year, when he was far too young to understand what the heck was going on. Ripping away the wrapping paper was a source of much amusement, as were the many cardboard boxes left over at the end of the morning. He didn’t have a huge amount to open, being as we’re skint and the afore-mentioned lack of large family, but I think he got some good toys. The kitchen is definitely his favourite, which is a relief as it was the most expensive! He also loves his bumblebee beanbag, was a bit scared of it initially but now throws himself onto it and drags it around the floor.

In other news, sleep has been a bit all over the place thanks to molars coming through. Poor little guy has woken a few times in quite a state and I can’t say I blame him looking at the size of those buggers. We now have a total of five complete teeth and two more coming through. I shall be bloody glad when this teething business is over.

We had him measured again on the 22nd. I was confident that he had gained enough height to be back on the chart again (barely) but it turned out to be rather disappointing. He’s only gained 1.5cm in three months and the HV has advised us to see the GP in the New Year. It’s unlikely any tests will be done at this stage, but we need to bring it to the doctor’s attention. Weight gain was slowing down a bit, but nothing to be worried about apparently. Head circumference on the other hand is nice and stable on the 50th percentile!

Sprogzilla is learning new words so fast now that I can barely keep up and his comprehension is amazing! He’s quite the little mover too, twirling around and swaying to anything with the slightest tune and he can even do some cool Yogo poses! His favourite “move” is hopping like a frog and shouting “up” and “down” accordingly.

Sprogdaddy washed the boy’s hair last night. We don’t do it often as a) his hair never seems to need it and b) he screams the house down when being rinsed. Yesterday was no exception. There are days I am very glad I don’t do bath time.

Oh well, housework calls. Sprogzilla wishes you all a fabulous and peaceful New Year!

Sunday Summary: A Very Welcome Growth Spurt

Sprogmama growth spurt, sleep, talking Sunday Summary 0 Comment

I’ve procrastinated again when it comes to writing the summary which is really silly of me because Sprogzilla is achieving so much! I’ve been keeping notes in his diary but to be honest I can barely keep up!

The biggest advancement is his speech. A couple of weeks ago I made a list of everything he could say and it was more than 30 words! As if that isn’t amazing enough, he is coming up with new ones several times a week. In just the last seven days we’ve had sun, moon, towel, more, gone, star, toast, dinner and sheep. His understanding of association is coming along fabulously too. He can say duck and cow and make their respective sounds and he makes monkey noises whenever he sees one on the telly.

Around mid-November, I decided to casually check his height and was pleased to see a little bit of progress. I checked again just over a week later as he seemed to be going through quite a major growth and development spurt and he’d gained another 2cm! He is now no longer off the bottom of the height chart, which is incredibly reassuring. I’m really looking forward to his official weigh-in and height check just before Christmas.

This also means he has finally outgrown all those 6-9 and 9-12 month clothes. Yes, he really was that short! I’ve bought quite a few 12-18 month clothes lately and even some 18-24 in preparation. The problem we’ve had for a long time is that although he is short, his head is a normal size. We’ve had so much trouble finding tops that go over his head but don’t drown his arms or make it look like he’s wearing tunic.

Another tooth has been making an appearance, this time it’s the upper left incisor. Oddly, Sprogzilla doesn’t seem to be as troubled by teething compared to when the first ones came in. I’ll regret saying that of course, we already had a situation last night where he wouldn’t sleep and had to get up for a while. He didn’t seem to be in any obvious discomfort however, merely wanting to scamper around the living room and eat jam on toast until 2am!

Talking of sleep, it has been going really well so far. He sleeps from about 8pm, wakes around 5-6am for a nursing and then goes back down until around 8am. We were starting to see some regression about three weeks ago, he was waking earlier each day and once or twice more during the night and naps were a real fight, so the decision was made to drop to one nap. As soon as this was implemented his sleep returned to normal, in fact, he began pushing his single nursing to around 7am and sometimes even missed it altogether!

Of course, something always comes along to mess things up and the poor little guy caught a cold recently. He’s been understandably more restless, but it’s not been too bad. Once he gets better he’ll hopefully continue to eliminate that final feed and sleep right through the night consistently.

Sunday Summary: Talking Up A Storm

Sprogmama feeding, sleep, talking, teeth, walking Sunday Summary 0 Comment

We’ve had several new developments over the last two weeks, but the biggest is probably Sprogzilla’s emerging language skills. He has picked up more new words since the last growth spurt than ever before and I don’t think it will be long before we hear something new almost every day.

The strangest word he has learned to say is ceiling. We were all sitting at the dining table the other day and noticed he kept pointing up and grinning. Goodness knows what was so funny up there, but we explained the name and he picked it up amazingly fast. We also have “nana” (banana), which he asks for after his porridge every evening. Then there’s “toes” and “belly”, both of which he will point out on either us or himself, and sometimes he will say “bed” when he is tired. He also has a cuddly dinosaur in his cot which he named Ernie.

I never fail to be amazed at how quickly he learns by observation now. We bought him a toy toaster the other day and after one instance of watching me push the toast down and turn the timer dial, he did it himself! This evening I showed him how the light switches work and he instantly picked that up too! His fascination with anything that opens and closes continues, now he can close the living room door behind him by pulling on the wood part between the glass panels. He has tried to put his socks on when being dressed and associates shoes with going outdoors.

Walking continues to go from strength to strength, in fact I’ve hardly seen him crawl at all this last week. It helps that he can now finally stand from sitting so he no longer needs to crawl somewhere to pull himself up. He is blazingly fast on his feet too and will run if given a good bit of space to pick up speed. We’re having a few falls though as he is not yet paying attention to what’s under his feet.

Dinner time has always been a pleasant experience for the most part. However, Sprogzilla has never understood that when he’s full he can just leave the remaining food on the plate. Instead, he tends to lob it all on the floor and then gets very upset if I tell him off with a simple “no”. Now he has decided it’s fun to feed us his leftovers – daddy ended up having cold garlic chicken and broccoli today! He can also drink from a cup or glass without spilling anything, until he gets distracted that is.

He now brushes his teeth with a little toothbrush and it looks so damn cute! We enjoyed a sweet little game of peekaboo yesterday as he ducked down into the bath and popped back up like a Jack-in the-box, emphatically blurting “boo!”. Still no luck using the potty, but he does come and let one of us know as soon as he’s filled his nappy so I don’t think progress is far away.

He has also learned to copy daddy strumming his lips with his finger – except he brings both his hands up and flexes his fingers instead. At bedtime, he gives us the sweetest little kisses and giggles coyly. I love putting him down at night and watching him snuggle into his duvet after nursing. He sometimes likes to do these bizarre cot gymnastics though, where he sticks his bum in the air and nearly stands on his head!

We’ve had a couple of problems along with the exciting new developments. I guess Sprogzilla’s little brain is buzzing because he is a nightmare at going down for naps right now. Several times this week he has refused his second nap and been so exhausted at bedtime that he wakes more frequently from over-tiredness. He is also getting up for the day up to two hours earlier than normal. While this is still considerably better than three months ago, it makes me a bit stressed at times and I fear that he will regress back to his old sleep patterns.

The other issue is tantrums – they are becoming more frequent as the little guy gets frustrated with things he cannot do and annoyed over restrictions placed on him. Even the simple act of closing a door to prevent him going into a forbidden room is enough to set off the tears and foot stomping. This is only to be expected as his desire for independence grows, but it sure is taxing….

Sunday Summary: Stompity Stomp

Sprogmama sleep, talking, walking Sunday Summary 0 Comment

My, how time flies as the little monkey gets older, I’ve missed the summary for another three weeks!

Earlier this week we had the drama of Sprogzilla’s height and weight not being as far along as I’d expected. After a day or two of scaring myself silly reading up on the internet, I decided not to think about it any further and we’ll deal with it IF there’s even an issue.

So, leaving all that behind, what fun have we had these last few weeks? Well, walking just gets better and better, in fact he can almost run now! He’s got the drunken penguin waddle down to an art and boy does he look mighty pleased with himself. Over the last few days, he has discovered a highly amusing new ability that walking enables – stomping!

Yes, he will gleefully toddle from the lounge to the nursery and back, stomping his left foot (and always his left lol) while we follow him and stomp along. It’s a great game that deserves repeating up and down the hall ad infinitum and goodness knows how daft Sprogdaddy and I look doing it too.

He also loves wandering outside on the patio, though we have to be careful not to let him fall on the hard surface or hit the brick wall or step. He’s still very wobbly on his feet, bless him.

Sprogdaddy dug the Babybjorn bouncer/seat thingy out of the loft earlier in the week and Sprogzilla absolutely loves it. Many months ago, we would bounce him to sleep in it, it’s the only way he would nap sometimes. Now he clambers onto it all by himself and lounges in it watching TV like a true couch potato. I’d been considering getting one of those mini armchairs for toddlers, but I think he’s perfectly happy with this! I posted a photo of him in it for this week’s Wordless Wednesday (my first yet!).

Shortly after my last summary, I was so proud to see him pretending to talk on the phone. He wasn’t holding the actual phone, it was a hairbrush I think, but he held it by the side of his head and started chattering. What a sweetie! Since then, he’s used all sorts of objects as phones, but if you give him a real one he just look at you as if to say “What am I supposed to do with this?”

Sleep seems pretty stable. We had a few days on and off where he only wanted one nap, but he seems to be back to two again now. It’s bloody hard figuring out when he wants to nap on a day-to-day basis, I can’t wait until he does drop one for good. He slept a whopping twelve and a half hours one night – Sprogdaddy and I were up before he was! That hasn’t happened since, but I am still incredibly grateful for the average 10hrs of solid sleep he has each night.

Earlier in the month we introduced a gorgeous new organic wool/cotton pillow and duvet into Sprogzilla’s cotbed. I can’t say too much about it now as the supplier isn’t officially selling them yet, but they are really nice and now I want full-size ones for my own bed. :D

Sprogzilla had a little accident a few days ago, he was playing with daddy’s feet on the sofa, missed and slipped off. He banged his little head on the floor (carpeted, luckily) and as usual I was in more of a state than he was. It didn’t help that he had to go to bed ten minutes later and I spent all evening reading up on head injuries and getting Sprogdaddy to check on him every half an hour.

Other cute little developments recently include brushing his hair (with a proper comb) and his teeth (with his hand/wrist lol!).

So, that was the last three weeks in a nutshell, as much as I can remember anyway. I’m a bit lazy when it comes to writing notes down in my diary and I really must make more of an effort as I’ll be so angry with myself if I forget these priceless moments. Let’s see if I can keep things going next week……

Sunday Summary: Running A Bit Late

Sprogmama talking, teething Sunday Summary 0 Comment

Apologies for the lack of posts recently and this delayed summary. We’ve been busy working on Sprogzilla’s sleep routines for the last couple of weeks and it’s been a bit stressful at times. More on that when I post the sleep log for July over the next couple of days, but I can tell you there’s some really good news on the sleep front…..

Sprogzilla is as cheerful as ever and is clearly having another growth spurt. Amusingly, I can always tell when one is in progress as he has little bouts of hiccups! His appetite for solids has increased noticeably over the last few days too. Tooth number four has finally emerged and is giving him a little bit of grief, but hopefully we’re over the worst of it now.

Last week, he did the cutest thing as nap time came around. He crawled over to the sofa where I’d left his sleeping bag and brought it over to daddy. Darling little guy was tired and knew it was time for sleep!

He’s also had lots of fun playing ball with me and Sprogdaddy. His throwing skills leave a bit to be desired, but that will come with practice. Good thing his toys are durable, as his favourite trick right now is to smash them around with all his might. Am a bit more worried about the French doors though……

Sprogzilla has also figured out how to tell us when he’s ready to get out of the bath – he pulls the plug out!

He also enjoys handing us objects and even trying to feed us! At least ten times a day, I get my slippers handed to me one by one. It can get a bit annoying when you’re trying to do something, but there’s no denying it’s damn cute.

Language skills are improving too. While he’s been able to say simple words like ‘hello’ and ‘bye’ for some time now, he’s saying them more often and more clearly. The baby babble is giving way to obvious sentences, but who knows what language he’s using!

I found an interesting toy for sale on a local used baby goods Facebook group the other day. It’s an activity bench with wheels on one end so baby can push it round and round the column on the opposite side. Sprogzilla is thrilled with it! He spends ages pushing it endlessly and he loves the funky music it plays and the hinged flaps on the activity bit. I don’t think I’ve mentioned before how fascinated my little boy is with anything that opens and closes!

It’s my birthday in less than three weeks and I’m getting another stroller. Don’t laugh, I know I am an addict. My iCandy and Maxi-Cosi three-wheelers are going up for sale so I can have my shiny new Baby Jogger Summit XC instead. Sprogdaddy is a darling and letting me have it early so we can make the most of the rest of summer going on country rambles. Roll on tomorrow!

Sunday Summary: One Small Step…..

Sprogmama biting, sleep, talking, teething, walking Sunday Summary 0 Comment

It’s been another interesting week, mostly things continuing on from my last summary. Sprogzilla has cut his fourth incisor and so his sleep has improved considerably. He is going longer stretches (sometimes almost five hours straight!) for the first session of the night and is not waking up screaming. Even his second nightly session has increased to over two hours for the last two nights. We have also started putting him to bed a couple of hours earlier and he doesn’t seem to think it’s just naptime anymore. Of course, now that I have dared to write this, he will revert to his old patterns. I’m certainly not going to get my hopes up that all this will stick until it’s happened for at least a couple of weeks.

He does appear to be going through a major growth spurt however, and is clearly working on walking and talking. For most of this week, he’s been taking the odd unsupported step and then falling down. Today, he climbed off his Bounce and Spin Zebra and took three steps over to me sitting nearby! I so wish Sprogdaddy had been home to see it.

We’ve heard lots of babbling that sounds like nonsensical sentences. The little guy is obviously trying to say something, we’re just not clever enough to figure out what yet. A couple of days ago, he was handing us his toys and we were passing them back and I’d swear he said thank you! Or should I say “taaank ooo”.

As usual, I keep having to move things further out of his reach. He may be a short fella, but there’s not a lot of places beyond the grasp of those chubby little fingers.

He regularly clambers onto the sofa now and can also climb down backwards with ease. It’s so lovely when he climbs up for cuddles! He also enjoys spinning me around when I’m sitting in the computer chair!

One new habit I’m not so thrilled to see is biting. He used to do it to Sprogdaddy occasionally, but now I’ve felt it a couple of times – including right now as I write this post! I actually have a bruise forming with two tiny teethmarks embedded in my arm! I was a bit concerned the other day as he bit my nipple (by cripes, that was sharp!) but he hasn’t done it since. I suspect the startled squeal I let out had something to do with that…..
